DESCRIPTION

Setting

The property is located on the east side of John Street north of the intersection with Quarry Street. John Street is a residential street with a tree-lined sidewalk on each side. The house on the property was constructed immediately off the sidewalk. The property drive leads past the north end of the house for off-street parking.

Description

The house is a 2-story vernacular house facing west to John Street that ha has a 2-story rear addition. The house's end end gabled roof is clad with asphalt shingles; it has minimal eaves on the side walls and rakes on the gable end walls. The frame walls are clad with aluminum siding. Windows are replacement 1x1 double hung sash units that are not aligned vertically or symmetrically. The main (west) elevation has three windows on the second floor, not aligned with the door and two windows on the first floor. The panelled door near the center of the west elevation opens under a small hipped roof pent. The two end walls have no windows on the core. The house has a stucco over stone foundation. The rear addition is a 2-story section with the same cladding and replacement windows as the core.

History

The house was constructed c. 1860. The house appears to be indicated on the historic map of 1875. The house appears as 85-87 John Street on the historic maps of 1890 and 1898. The house appears on all subsequent maps and aerials.
