DESCRIPTION

Setting

This large corner lot is on the SE corner of Birch Avenue and Race Street. It is a well-manicured, mainly flat lot with garage at south end. The sidewalk wraps around both street-sides of the lot and mature trees provide shade to the lot and street. The house is set back about 20' from Race St. sidewalk and 30' from Birch Ave. sidewalk, providing a more suburban feeling then found elsewhere in Witherspoon-Jackson.

Description

This stucco-clad, 1.5 story Cotswold inspired bungalow appears to front Birch but its address is Race Street. With its many architectural features, it may be considered one of the finer houses in the neighborhood. Its steeply pitched, asphalt-shingled roof has front gable faces Race Street; a corbeled brick chimney is centered on ridge. The roof flairs on both the north and south sides. Tan stucco has a swirl treatment. Large, centered, hipped-roofed dormers are located at the roof flair on each side. Fenestration on the main (west) side consists of two pairs of tall, narrow sash windows (windows all replacements on house), centered, centered, and a set of 4 sash windows centered on first level. The main entrance is on the SE corner; it features an inset porch, curved entrance way, and original wooden door. North façade facing Birch displays the large dormer (stucco clad with set of four sash windows and eyebrow type louver above). The flared roof and dormer element extends half the façade outward towards Birch while the other half is set back 12' from front plane. This treatment is repeated on south side. A garage, connected by a swirled stucco-clad wall sits south of the house and faces west to Race. It is a stucco-clad, front end able building with asphalt-shingled roof, and two bays with wooden swing doors. A single window with brick sill and lintel is located under the gable.
