DESCRIPTION

Setting

The property is located on the north side of Birch Avenue near the center of the block extending from John Street to Witherspoon Street. Birch Avenue is a residential street with a tree-lined sidewalk on each side. The property has a small front lawn off the sidewalk and a paved drive along the eastern boundary.

Description

The house is a 2-story vernacular building facing south to Birch Avenue. It has a front end gabled orientation; the roof is clad with asphalt shingles and features a small brick chimney near the center of the ridge and aluminum eaves. The frame walls are clad with aluminum siding. Windows are 6x6 double hung sash units, some of which appear to be historic but others replacement. Most windows feature inoperable shutters. The house has two bays on the south and east elevations; the west elevation has two small windows on the second floor only. A full-length front porch extends along the south elevation; it has a hipped roof clad with asphalt shingles. The entrance is located near the southwest corner of the enclosed porch; it has a single 1x1 window to the west and four to the east. A set of concrete steps leads down from the porch to the grade of the front lawn. The house has a concrete foundation.

History

The house was constructed c. 1925. Historic maps indicate that the property was vacant as late as the Sanborn atlas of 1918. The first indication of the house is the historic aerial of 1940, which shows the building (as do all subsequent historic aerials). Note: the historic atlas of 1930 does not document houses along Birch Avenue.
